Some companies begin with a business plan. Ours began with a road, a map, and no particular hurry to come home.

For more than fifteen years, through Adventures Overland, we drove the long way across places most travellers only glimpse from a plane window. We waited out storms in border towns. We ate at tables we were invited to rather than booked into. And over all those miles, one thing became impossible to ignore: what people treasure afterwards is rarely the thing they planned. It’s the detour. The dinner that ran long. The morning nobody wanted to end.

The idea for AO Experiences didn’t come from a boardroom. It came from a question we kept being asked by friends, and then by people we’d never met, who had followed our journeys and wanted one shaped for themselves. Somewhere quieter. Somewhere real. Just for their family.

What they were really asking for wasn’t a route. It was our judgement — the part you can’t download.

Knowing which stay is worth the extra day’s drive. Which guide tells the true stories and which recites them. Which month turns a fine destination into one you’ll talk about for years.

So we built a place to do exactly that. AO Experiences designs private, tailor-made journeys for people who’d rather have their travel feel like their own than like everyone else’s. There is no catalogue to choose from and no set departure to join. There is a conversation, and then a journey that exists for one traveller and no one else.

We are, at heart, still the two travellers who set out all those years ago. What’s changed is simply this: the roads we plan now are yours.
